New changes to eBay's affiliate program allow eBay affiliates to earn commissions linking to their own auctions.

The eBay Affiliate Program pays Internet publishers and website owners to drive new users to eBay. Affiliates promote eBay with banners, text links, newsletters and other innovative tools. In return, eBay pays affiliate commissions for driving new users as well as bids and Buy It Now purchases.

Affiliates earn from $5.00 to $13.00 for each new active user and from $0.05 to $0.09 for each bid or eBay Buy It Now transaction. Currently, the top 25 affiliates in the program average over $100,000 in monthly commissions.

This week eBay changed the rules to allow affiliates to link to their own auctions. In the past you could earn money referring people to other auctions on eBay, or you could earn a referral fee credit --but not commissions, when referring people outside of eBay to your own auctions. Now you can make more money on eBay both ways --with affiliate commissions and by driving traffic to your own auctions.

Affiliates have access to a wide variety of buttons, banners, and text links after signing up for the eBay affiliate program. You can feature links direct to your own auctions or even get a search box to put on your web site where users can search eBay. Whenever they conduct a search it puts your affiliate cookie in their computer so you get paid if they register, bid or buy.

One drawback to the program is that affiliate cookies only last 7 days. This is way too short. If someone clicks on a link and takes action right away this is fine, but we all know that people often start doing something on the internet and get distracted but return to it later. I have always felt that a 30-day cookie activation period would be much more fair to affiliates and allow them to make more money with affiliate commissions.

My other complaint is that eBay uses Commission Junction to manage their affiliate program. CJ is the largest affiliate company on the web but they are also the most difficult to navigate, find links and have horrible support. Some of the eBay affiliate tools are on CJ while others are on eBay and this makes it somewhat difficult to use --especially for beginners.

You can also use Pay-per-click to drive customers to eBay. In fact this is what some of the top affiliates do. Although eBay says the top affiliates make over $100,000 per month --that is before their PPC costs. I would love to know how much these affiliates really make.

I tried a small PPC campaign on Miva which is much less costly than Google or Yahoo. I earned about $300 in commissions but I spent just over $230 in PPC. So it was profitable, but that is because Miva charges less for keywords. I can't see how you could do that on Google where keywords cost much more.

Having said all that, the eBay affiliate program is still a good deal especially if you have a web site where you get natural traffic.
