Beware The Ides of March – eBay Raises Fees and Restricts New & Small Sellers

March 15th, 2011 by Skip McGrath

I think it was the Soothsayer who told Caesar to “Beware the Ides of March.”  That should have been the title of yesterday’s blog where I forecast eBay’s announcement today.

I will do an in-depth article on the new policies in the newsletter next week –but here are the highlights of today’s announcement:

eBay Fees

Final value Fee rates will be reduced and applied to the total amount of sale—including shipping—starting July 6

  • Under the new Standard fees, sellers can list Auction-style free at any start price—up to 50 items a month.  Plus you can add a Buy It Now price to your 50 items free. Over 50 items and you will pay the standard BIN upgrade fee.
  • The Standard Final Value Fee rate for Auction-style listings will stay at 9% and be applied to the total amount of the sale—including shipping—with a maximum Final Value Fee of $100.
  • Auction-style fees for Store subscribers will NOT change in April: If you sell more than 50 items Auction-style per month, an eBay Store subscription will most likely give you the lowest overall fees. If you want to know how your listings break down, here is a free fee illustrator that will tell you whether a store will work for you or not.
  • Starting July 6,  Final Value Fee rates for Fixed Price listings will be reduced and applied to the total amount of the sale—including shipping.  Auction-style final value fees will also apply to shipping. This change applies to both eBay Standard fees and eBay Store subscription packages.  eBay says the reason for this is to encourage low cost shipping –what it will probably do is encourage more of us to sell on Amazon.
  • Insertion Fees for Fixed Price listings will not change. As a Store subscriber, you’ll have the same Insertion Fees you have today. (For Basic store subscribers that is $0.20 per listing)
  • Insertion Fees for Auction-style listings with a Store subscription will not change. Store subscribers can continue to list unlimited items Auction-style for as low as 10¢.
  • The  5% fee discount for PowerSellers who are not Top Rated Sellers will go away on July 6th.

See fee chart for details.

eBay Shopping Cart

  • By this summer, a new eBay Shopping Cart will support all forms of approved payments on eBay (only PayPal will be supported during the initial phase). Buyers can use the cart for both Auction-style and Fixed Price items.
  • The eBay Shopping Cart should eliminate unpaid items for Fixed Price listings. Fixed Price items added to a buyer’s cart but not paid for will remain available for other buyers to purchase— so your listing stays active until payment is sent.
  • A limited number of buyers can opt in now to try out the new eBay Shopping Cart. It will be available to more buyers in the coming weeks.

PayPal Funds Hold for new and small sellers and problem sellers

Sellers who do not meet minimum standards and and sellers with little or no selling history, funds from buyer payments will be unavailable for a period of time to ensure successful fulfillment.

  • If you have a limited selling history—90 days or less from your first sale, 25 or fewer sales transactions or $250 or less total sales since your first sale—or if you have a Below Standard rating in your Seller Dashboard, your buyer’s payment will first show as pending in your PayPal account. Funds will be available 3 days after eBay receives confirmation of delivery when you upload tracking information, or 7 days after your latest estimated delivery date if you don’t upload tracking but mark the item as shipped. If no shipping information is provided to eBay—you don’t upload tracking information or mark the item as shipped—funds will be available 21 days after the buyer pays. The key here is to use a shipping service that provides tracking and always upload the tracking info to eBay.
  • If you’re subject to this update, you’ll see new information in My eBay to help manage your cash flow, including the estimated date funds will be available and steps you can take to help get your funds faster.

If you would like to compare notes, grouse or commiserate with other sellers, eBay has set up a special discussion board for the announcement.

“reduced” is a key word here as when you look closer, ebay is only “reducing” the amount they take from items in the electronics category. Since I sell no electronics, this is a big kick in the butt. What irks me is that the press releases are worded as if its something we should get excited about. While electronics are a huge part of ebay sales, there never has been one announcement that ebay has made that I appreciated, except the departure of Meg Whitman. I really did think the new CEO would grow his/ebays business without digging into the pockets of his clients but we now know the tell of the tale and what will most certainly happen in the future. When ebay needs a monetary nudge to meet Wall Street expectactions, sellers beware its time we all help line the pockets of those that are of POWER! (not you POWER seller!)
